I began playing the trumpet at age eight and switched to the French horn when I was 18 years old. At age 21, after having studied with Professor Erich Penzel at the Conservatory of Music in Cologne, Germany, I won the Principal Horn position of the Frankfurt/Main Opera. Three years later I was appointed the Principal Horn position of the prestigious Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, Germany.
During my 20 year tenure with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, serving as a long time member of the acclaimed German Brass and having played as a substitute in the world-renowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, I have been fortunate to have played with some of the most famous conductors in the world including Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Georg Solti, James Levine, Trevor Pinnock, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Carlo Maria Giullini, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Roger Norrington, Lorin Maazel, Herbert Blomstedt, Donald Runnicles, Georges Pretre, Zubin Mehta, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Neville Marriner, Kurt Sanderling, Erich Leinsdorf, Bernhard Haitink, and Pierre Boulez.
As a professional musician, I have played on more the 50 recordings and have performed extensively throughout the globe.
I enjoy being a guest clinician and private instructor at middle and high schools in the Athens and Greater Atlanta Area and on a weekly basis I coach well over 100 horn students. I also work with brass sections from schools in Oconee County, Jackson County, Forsyth County, Gwinnett County and Fulton County. My horn studio has currently 40 students from age 11-25 and many of them are participating in All State Bands, the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony and Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra. On a weekly base I coach 125+ horn students.
My student Zach Potts is invited to perform at NPR "From The Top" in February 2019 and he is selected for the $10,000 "Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award".
After playing with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 2008 and 2011, I was invited again in May 2017 to perform "Ein Heldenleben". While in Berlin I gave a masterclass at the prestigious School of Music (Hans Eisler) for Prof. Marie-Luise Neunecker's horn studio. In the same month I performed a televised concert with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Cologne in the Cologne cathedral. Following an invitation, i played on a faculty recital at UGA in Nov. 2017. In February 2018 my wife and I will be performing the world premier of "Six Dialogues for Flute and Horn" at the Southeast Horn Workshop, a piece written for us by UGA Professor Emeritus Dr. Roger C. Vogel. This Spring I will appear as soloist and guest conductor with the Northwinds Symphony Band. On Sept. 19th I will conduct the UGA Wind Symphony.
I live with my wife Angela Jones-Reus (Professor of Flute at the University of Georgia) in Athens, GA.
