
Nick Kelly
HEART Youth Symphony conductor
Nick Kelly graduated from the University of Toledo with a bachelor’s degree in music education in 2021. During his time at UT, he studied his primary instrument, cello, with Amy Chang. He also sat as principal cellist of the UT Symphony Orchestra and played with the Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra. He also studied violin with Gina Buzzelli, bass with Norm Damshroder, and conducting with Matthew Forte. Nick moved to Athens shortly after college to take the position of orchestra teacher at Hilsman Middle School here in Clarke County. In 2023, Nick received the Frieda M. Thomas Teacher of Promise Award from the Foundations for Excellence. The award honors early-career teachers who inspire student learning and achievement, actively improve and share their skills, collaborate eectively, solve problems to strengthen their school community, and lead with vision, purpose, and integrity. Nick currently teaches grades 6-8 orchestra and choir at Hilsman Middle School, plays cello with the Athens Symphony Orchestra, and gigs around the greater Athens area.
